Blocked crossings pose safety risks, specifically in locations where trains routinely hinder roadway and pedestrian movement for extended periods. To address this potential safety risk, the Federal Railroad Administration established the Blocked Crossing Portal in 2019. The portal requests specific information from users reporting blocked crossings, including the date, time, location, and duration that crossing is blocked.
The City of Pelham sponsored an application to the Federal Railroad Administration's Railroad Crossing Elimination Grant Program. The City, along with project partners Helena, Shelby County, ALDOT, and CSX Railroad, is seeking federal funding to permanently close two CSX at-grade railroad crossings on Shelby County Road 52 at Lee Street.
